Vesuvio Bakery was owned and operated by Anthony Dapolito until being sold in 2003. The bakery was opened in 1920 by Anthony Dapolito's parents not long after he was born. As a child Mr Dapolito delivered bread on his bicycle. The business was sold in 2003 to friends of the family who agreed to keep the name and facade intact. Anthony Dapolito was known as "the unofficial Mayor of Greenwich Village" and was active in Downtown politics for over 50 years. He died on July 2, 2003.
